OATrageous Oatmeals: Review & OXO Giveaway + Recipe

oatmeal-coverSince oats are one of our safe allergy-friendly foods I was particularly excited about reviewing the new cookbook, OATrageous Oatmeals by Kathy Hester, which is coming out in September.  The new book has recipes to show you oats in a whole new light, and far from my usual uses for them.

I was invited to be in the review group by the author and received an e-copy of this book for free.  My opinions are my own and I was not paid or required to write this review.  Along with the review there is an awesome giveaway for a copy of the book and some great OXO products, so be sure to read to the end of the post to enter to win!

We love oats in our family but sometimes I am stuck on how to use them outside of the normal oatmeal for breakfast and cookies for dessert (or, well, in my house for anytime,) so I jumped right into the book and was impressed with the amount of different ways to cook with oats – I never knew they were so versatile!  Think Italian Veggie and Oat Sausage, Veggie Oat Tacos and Oat Pizza Crust Topped with vegan sausage crumbles made from Steel-cut oats.

But if you aren’t so adventurous, don’t worry Kathy also includes new takes on traditional favorites like Banana Oatmeal Cookie Pancakes and Strawberries and Cream Overnight Refrigerator Oats too.  From now on it’s Exciting Oats for Every Meal!

All of the recipes are vegan and also includes soy-free and gluten-free recipes which is wonderful for our food allergy family.  We use Bob’s Red Mill as our oats of choice but remember, as always, to check the packages to assure the items are safe for you and your {food allergy} family.  If you have celiac disease or another condition that requires you to eat gluten-free, always buy oats that are clearly marked “gluten-free.”

I have been craving pizza so I opted to try (and Kathy is kindly letting me share the recipe below with all of you) the Steel-Cut Oat Sausage Crumbles – and what a delicious addition to our pizza they were!  My photo did not do them justice so I opted to use Kathy’s instead.  Her book contains photos of almost every item which I love!

I’m sharing a couple more photos below because they are done so well and they really make me wish I was inside Kathy’s book (that’s possible, right?!?)  I love that she has included recipes from jazzed up oatmeals to drinks to dog and cat treats and bath and body products too.  And I found I secretly wished I had a puppy to make the Peppermint Puppy Cookies for!

This week we’re going to give a few more of the recipes a try – some atop my list include the Fat-Free Pumpkin Raisin Granola, Candy Bar Overnight Refrigerator Oatmeal, Oatmeal Cookie Crusted Apple Crumb Pie, Potato Gnocchi, and Cajun-Stuffed Bell Peppers.  And, yes, these are all made with oats!

Kathy has partnered with OXO to celebrate the launch of OATrageous, so for those of us whose kitchen gadgets have seen better days, be sure to enter the giveaway below which includes an OXO bundle valued at over $85!  Check out these awesome kitchen items.  If those photos didn’t make you want to drool, these products sure will!

We are excited to try many of the recipes in the book, it is great to have some alternatives to the standard way we have been using oats in our home.  And did you know that eating oats daily can lower bad cholesterol, help control high blood pressure and maintain your blood glucose level, all while making you feel fuller for longer.

I received an e-copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in anyway.  The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this book.
