Disclosure: I was invited to be in the review group by Deena and Handmade Happy Mail and received a Handmade Happy Mail subscription box for free. My opinions are my own and I was not paid or required to write this review.
As a prior small business owner I love to support other small business owners, especially those run by women. Handmade Happy Mail is a new small business bringing beautifully handcrafted greeting cards to your doorstep monthly. Handmade Happy Mail is all about sending happiness one card at a time.
Handmade Happy Mail was founded by Deena Hopkins who recently took her craft of making handmade greeting cards a little further by making them available on a monthly basis in a subscription box. I recently spoke with Deena and interviewed her about Handmade Happy Mail and Deena was so generous to offer a giveaway of a 3 months subscription box of Handmade Happy Mail (be sure to enter at the bottom of the post!)
Here’s a little snippet of what Handmade Happy Mail “is a monthly subscription box of totally unique and beautiful greeting cards made by my hands. A subscription box works much like a magazine subscription – you sign up once, then a lovely box is delivered to your door every month! You don’t have to do a thing, it’s all automatic! The cards and postage stamps come to you, you simply write a personal message and send them to your loved ones.”
Handmade Happy Mail subscription box contains five cards – two birthday cards, two themed cards (like Thank You or Congratulations), and one special holiday card (like Mother’s Day or Halloween). August boxes will be sent on July 15th, September boxes on August 15th, and so on. Here’s a look at the July subscription box:

Deena personally and makes all of her cards herself – they are handmade in the U.S. using all made in the U.S. supplies, tools, and papers. That’s pretty awesome.
Deena’s work is beautiful, she gets every cut and layer right and pays attention to the utmost details. From the colors to the textures and fonts, her cards are well-made with care, love, and beautiful details and accents.
Handmade Happy Mail has an easy online subscription process where you can choose a term – available in monthly, quarterly, and annual subscriptions with the shipping to you included in the price.
The Handmade Happy Mail subscription box is a great way to save you a trip to the store when you forget birthdays or holidays. They are wonderful to have on-hand at home to send to family and friends at a moments notice.
Did I mention that Deena also includes envelopes and stamps with the subscription box?!? This makes everything at your fingertips. Just grab a pen or pencil, write a personalized note inside each card, and send a smile on its way!
I recently spoke with Deena and had the pleasure of interviewing her and hearing more about her Company, how she got started and what Handmade Happy Mail is all about.
1. What exactly is Handmade Happy Mail and how does the monthly subscription box work?
Handmade Happy Mail is a monthly subscription box of totally unique and beautiful greeting cards made by my hands. A subscription box works much like a magazine subscription – you sign up once, then a lovely box is delivered to your door every month! You don’t have to do a thing, it’s all automatic! The cards and postage stamps come to you, you simply write a personal message and send them to your loved ones. Each box contains five cards – two birthday cards, two themed cards (like Thank You or Congratulations), and one special holiday card (like Mother’s Day or Halloween). August boxes will be sent on July 15th, September boxes on August 15th, and so on. So you have plenty of time to get cards out to your loved ones!
2. How did your interest in making cards grow? Did you start out scrapbooking or in other paper crafts?
I started out scrapbooking about twenty years ago. I found that I really enjoyed the process of putting together pretty paper and embellishments. About ten years ago I started experimenting with cards. Cards are a great way of creating art for me, but also sharing it with others – something scrapbooking didn’t really allow for. Things have grown from there.
3. How much time goes into making one card? You make them all by hand, correct?
I make every card by hand. Every stamp, every cut, every fold. Does that sound crazy? Maybe. But it’s the process that I actually really enjoy. There are so many gorgeous printed greeting cards out there. Which is wonderful for those artists. But my art isn’t make once on the computer, then print a million copies. I want to be different, I want my hands on every piece that has my name on it. It’s hard to put a time estimate on a card…It could be 10 minutes or it could be 10 days. I am a thinker by nature, so many of my ideas have to marinate for a while until I can get them accurately on to paper.
4. Rumor as it that you are the first (and only) monthly greeting card subscription box – is that true?
Well, as is with most rumors…that’s only partly true! While there are other stationery subscription boxes out there, Handmade Happy Mail is the only one made of totally *handmade* cards.
5. What made you decide to start offering your cards in a monthly subscription box?
Like most great ideas, it came as a solution to a problem. Family and friends love giving (and receiving) my cards, but they were always waiting until the last minute to order them. So I thought about how I could get people to have my cards on hand, at the ready. Thus the sub box solution!
6. What is your goal for Handmade Happy Mail? Where do you see HHM in the future?
My goal is simple – for my cards to make people happy. The best way for that to happen is for people to send them! Each and every customer is special and important to me because they are helping me meet that goal. As for the future, I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself. My goal for the end of the year is to have 25 subscribers. I’m about halfway there.
7. Do you tailor cards to the different seasons, events for the month and upcoming holidays? Yes! Every card is seasonal in theme and colors. The July box was very red, white, and blue! But it’s tasteful, not over the top. August will be summery and bold, then September will start to move toward fall colors.
8. With the increase in technology these date are you finding it difficult to gain customers or the opposite – i.e. easier because customers and recipients are more appreciative of receiving a handmade card in the mail?
I believe my customers are the type of people that know and appreciate the thought and time that goes in to sending a card in the mail. They also put value on handmade goods. That’s not for everybody, and that’s okay!
9. Do you sell your handmade cards in other locations as well?
I have an Etsy shop, and a Facebook page. My focus is on the monthly boxes, so I don’t post many one-off cards for sale right now. If you need something specific, reach out to me on Facebook or through email!
10. Is there anything else you’d like us to know about Handmade Happy Mail? Handmade Happy Mail is a small operation – my husband and myself. We do our best every day to provide a great experience for our customers.
We are thankful for every comment, every suggestion, and every order. Anything we can do to help you to make your loved ones happy as well, let us know!
Thank you Deena for taking the time to answer my questions, I hope you also learned more about Handmade Happy Mail, how the process works, and what goes on behind the scenes. The cards are truly unique and crafted with love.
