Halloween Costume Ideas for the Family

Disclosure: I received some of these products for free from Oriental Trading. My opinions are my own and I was not paid or required to write this review.

I am thrilled to have partnered with Oriental Trading again this year in two ways – one for non-food treats and one for family costume ideas.  Oriental Trading is your go-to place for all Halloween, from candy to non-food treats to decor to costumes, they have a lot of offer.

Oriental Trading makes it easy to see their collection of group and family costumes with a separate page to view them all together.  This makes it easy for your to gather the family around and decide what your costumes will be for this Halloween.  Here’s a preview of some the group costumes that they offer, with even more on their site to chose from.

As we browsed the Oriental Trading collection of costumes, my daughter loved so many of the options and we decided we would let her chose what our family costumes would be this year.

She loved many of the group costumes and I asked her to narrow her choices down to her top 3.  One of her top 3 was the Crayola Crayons.  These crayons are super cute, and with multiple kids they could chose different colors.

To infinity and beyond!  From Buzz Lightyear to Mr. Potato Head to Jessie and Woody, you’ll have a blast in these toy story costumes.

Her third choice is Star Wars™!

At 4 years old she’s already a pretty big Star Wars™ fan and with a new baby in the family we all agreed it was a great idea, as he could either be the perfect Yoda or Ewok.  (Spoiler already, Yoda won out for him this year!)

Next it was time to decide which characters we wanted to be from Star Wars.  We decided my husband would make the best Darth Vader, my daughter would be Princess Leia, I would be Luke Skywalker (wait until you see my awesome wig,) and the new baby would be Yoda.

If you are a Star Wars™ fan then you’ll remember the scenes in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker is training with Yoda. Luke carries Yoda on his back so we thought it would be best to make my little Yoda on my back in baby carrier, or most likely he will be carried on my front as he’s still a tad small to be back carried.

Oriental Trading does carry an adult Luke Skywalker costume, but since we decided it was best for me to be Luke from The Empire Strikes Back, I decided to use some of my own clothes for the costume and ordered the wig for Luke Skywalker from Oriental Trading.  I love the description of this item: ” Look just like the Star Wars hero from the 70s with this awesome dark blond wig in the great feathery, floppy style.”

I feel like this is one of those who wore it better type photos that you see in those fashion magazines.  And I’m pretty sure this model on the left rocked this hair style way better then me, which I am completely fine with by the way.

For Darth Vader we ordered the Men’s Classic Star Wars™ Darth Vader Costume.  This includes the printed chest piece, cape, and mask and we just added our own lightsaber from their site as well.  With the addition of black pants from his closet my husband was all set for the dark side.  This mask is truly awesome and we have been having fun with it since it arrived!

For Princess Leia we ordered the Girls’ Deluxe Princess Leia Costume, size Small.  This includes the wig, dress and belt and we just ordered our own blaster toy gun as well.  I feel like the blaster gun really makes the costume – well that and the awesome wig!!  First time trying on she was super excited about being Princess Leia and these are the photos to prove it!

For Yoda, Oriental Trading does carry a Yoda costume but it’s for larger child, so I went the DIY route for my son for this.  Crochet hat, brown onesie, a hooded cape made of fleece and a brown rope for the belt completed his outfit.  Doesn’t he just make the cutest Yoda?!  I’m not quite sure that he knows what’s going on, but he was happy to be Yoda.

Now that I’ve shared our family costumes, I would love to hear what you and your family are planning to dress up as this Halloween?
