If you happened to catch my blog post earlier this week, I am challenging myself to try out 10 new apple recipes throughout the next few weeks.
Originally I had planned on making them in order (see graphic,) but I jumped to #8 yesterday when I realized I had no other safe pancake mix in the house and my daughter wanted pancakes for breakfast. Check out that recipe here.
I have been searching for an allergy-friendly chunky applesauce and haven’t been able to find one in the stores, so with all the new apples in our home I knew I had to try to make my own.
This recipe is from Cooking Ala Mel and attracted me because it has no added sugar and you can basically toss everything into the crock-pot and let it sit. I love tasty, easy crock-pot dishes!
I followed her directions and was really impressed with this applesauce. Since it had no added sugar I used mostly red apples which are a bit sweeter than green ones.
This recipe is simple. Core and cut up about 10 medium to large apples (remove or leave the skins on depending on your preference,) 1 cup of water, and 2 cinnamon sticks and put into the slow cooker on low for 4-5 hours until the apples are soft.
Once done cooking, remove the cinnamon sticks and break the apples up with a wooden spoon by stirring. For a chunkier applesauce (which is what I made,) just break up until it reaches your desired consistency. For a smooth applesauce, transfer the apples to a food processor and process until smooth. Add ground cinnamon to taste.
My daughter and I enjoyed a bowl right after it was complete, and we both loved it. You are really abole to taste the different varieties of apples which provided for enough sweetness.
I definitely would recommend making this applesauce, it was super easy and super tasty. One of the fun parts about making it next time will be trying new varieties of apples and mixing up that taste that way.

- 10 medium to large apples, cored and roughly chopped (you can peel them if you want)
- 1 cup water
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Ground cinnamon, for finishing
- Place the chopped apples, water, and cinnamon sticks in the bowl of a slow cooker.
- Cook on low, covered, for 4-5 hours, until the apples are soft.
- Once done cooking, remove the cinnamon sticks.
- Break the apples up with a wooden spoon by stirring, until it reaches your desired consistency (for a chunkier applesauce).
- For a smooth applesauce, transfer the apples to a food processor, processing until smooth. Add ground cinnamon to taste.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- If you don't have cinnamon sticks then add a couple teaspoons of ground cinnamon to the apples in the slow cooker, and then add more if you like once it's done cooking and smooth.
