My daughter and I have been doing a lot of shopping together recently, with my husband working many long hours and some weekends it’s usually just the two of us, and she is now at an age where she would rather walk the store then be pushed in a stroller or cart. As with most Moms of two year olds this causes for some challenging shopping adventures!
While I have been letting her do some of her own shopping sans cart or stroller it hasn’t always been smooth.
Just the other day she wandered off under a rack of clothes – something we probably all did as kids – and my heart skipped a beat as I couldn’t locate her for about 10 seconds. Those 10 seconds felt like eternity. I knew she couldn’t have traveled too far and thankfully came out from under the rack laughing and saying “peek-a-boo.” (Okay, my heart can beat again.)
This got me thinking, gosh, what would happen if she wandered off? Would she know what to do?
This little boy has an independent spirit and thinks he’s too old to have his mom hold his hand when they’re out in public.
“MOM, I’M WAY TOO OLD FOR THIS!” the little boy says as his Mom holds his hand to cross the street.
Then while shopping one day he wanders off to play with trains. After not being able to find his way back to his Mom he knew exactly what to do “Look for someone I can trust…. I find a friendly sales clerk.”
This is a great message for kids that they should not panic if they get lost and to find a store employee to help them.
Although my daughter might not quite understand this concept yet when I returned home with her after our recent shopping experience I made sure we started reading this one together.
With some rhyming verses the story includes a good message for children who get lost in public places and would be great to read with your little ones to teach them what to do if this happens to them.
