DIY Under 5 – Hair Barrettes {made from vintage jewelry}

BusyBeeKate-DIYUnder5LogoI am really excited about the new segment on the blog called DIY Under 5 showing you some quick projects that you can do in under 5 minutes and for under $5!

This week I am sharing with you some fun hair barrettes that you can make using vintage jewelry. I used some vintage pins and both regular and clip earrings.

The supplies you need are:

– Vintage jewelry (items that aren’t too heavy work best)

– Hot glue gun (and glue)

– A pair of cutter pliers (and possibly needle-nosed depending on the type of jewelry backings that need to be removed)

– Plain barrettes (you can pick these up at the dollar store, health & beauty store, etc.)

Here’s a view of the supplies: BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesSupplies

Time to heat up that glue gun and let’s get started!

First I laid out the jewelry next to the barrettes that I wanted to adhere them too.  After I started working with them I realized I should’ve picked up some fun colored barrettes too, but I figure this project is so simple I can do that next time.  BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesSupplies2

I’ll walk you through the easy steps of this projecting using the hot air balloon barrette here: BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesSteps

Tada!   So simple, right?!  And so adorable.  Here is my daughter modeling her new barrette.  I love how this turned out, and took me (us) less than 5 minutes to make…. Up, Up and Away!  BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesFinal5

I continued this same process for the rest of the barrettes.  If there is a pin back make sure you use care in removing them, I definitely stabbed myself a couple of times! A close-up of some of the others I (we) made: BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesFinal2

And my final collection from this project: BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesFinal3

I really love how these turned out.  The fun part about this project is you can use items that you may already have on-hand at home or you can find some at your local thrift or consignment shop.  Many of the jewelry shown hear I paid less than $2 for. I made these using an old pair of earrings: BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesFinal6

And I just had to share this one with you…. one of my favs from them all!  She’s a kid, she can get away with it 😉 BusyBeeKate-HairBarrettesFinal4

We went ‘bananas’ over these… no pun, well actually, pun intended.   My daughter was excited once they were complete and got to try them on.  What girl doesn’t love some new jewelry, and especially some that she helped (more like watched) me make alongside.   It really was fun to use some cool, random vintage pieces in this DIY Under 5 project. Have a DIY Under 5 to share? Leave a comment, I’d love to see your projects! Love, Kate
